1. Enroll your incoming student with Seattle Public Schools during Open Enrollment (Jan 5 2026).  If your student’s home language (or one of their home languages) is something other than English, please indicate this on the enrollment form.
2. You must also submit a School Choice Form to enrollment services. On your Choice Form, indicate John Stanford International School. Open Enrollment for School Choice process.
   • Students entering second through fifth grades and students who wish to join John Stanford will be required to pass a language proficiency interview. Families will be contacted by John Stanford International School to schedule this interview.
   • The deadline for on-time submission of the School Choice Form is 11:59 p.m. on January 31 2026 The form must be received in enrollment by this time, postmarks do not count. If your form is received after this date/time, it will not be processed until after all the on-time forms.

What are the assignment tie-breakers for John Stanford International School?

• Native Speaker set-aside – 20% of seats in Kindergarten and First grade will be assigned to native Spanish or Japanese speakers (Native Speakers are students whose first, or one of their first languages, is Japanese or Spanish and have passed a language proficiency interview).
• All other seats
  • Siblings of current students
  • Children whose home address is within our GeoZone
  • Lottery for students whose home address is outside the GeoZone

What does it mean to be an option school?

Seattle Public Schools has a number of option schools that families can request during Open Enrollment. Everyone must apply to attend John Stanford, no one is automatically assigned.

Option schools have a GeoZone, providing priority for students who live near them. Since John Stanford is an International School, we have seats set aside for Native / Heritage speakers. The remaining seats are determined with tiebreakers — siblings of JSIS students are first, GeoZone second, and lottery third.

Will there be wait lists?

We anticipate a wait list for kindergarten and first grade. However, many families who were on the wait list last spring are now in our program.  There are seats designated for native / heritage speakers.  The rest of the seats will be subject to the set tiebreakers.

What if my child is in 2nd-5th grade?

Open spots in 2nd-5th grade can only be filled by fluent speakers of Japanese and Spanish.  These students will need to pass a language proficiency test for enrollment.  There are often openings in these higher grades, so if your student is a fluent speaker, please apply.

What is the student/teacher ratio?

The student/teacher ratio is the same as all Seattle Public Schools – which are subject to contractual and state guidelines.  However, the John Stanford International School community has traditionally provided funding for additional support in the immersion classrooms.

Who is eligible for transportation?

Students assigned to John Stanford International School who live outside the transportation area for John Stanford International are NOT eligible for district funded transportation.

How do I select Spanish or Japanese?

First, seats are filled with Native/Heritage speakers and siblings of current students. Second, families select their preferred language and seats are assigned through lottery.

¿Qué significa el ser una escuela opcional?

Las Escuelas Públicas de Seattle tienen una cantidad de escuelas opcionales que familias pueden solicitar durante el tiempo de matrícula abierta. Todos deben de solicitar entrada a John Stanford, nadie automáticamente es asignado.

Las escuelas opcionales tienen una zona geográfica de servicio y eso da prioridad a estudiantes que viven cerca a ellos. Ya que John Stanford es una Escuela Internacional, nosotros tenemos asientos reservados para aquellos que tienen su lenguaje natal ó son descendientes. El resto de asientos son determinados através de desempate – hermanos de estudiantes son primero, zona de servicio es segundo y lotería es tercero.

¿Habra listas de espera?
