The 2019 American Library Association top book awards were recently announced.  These titles are considered the top books for children and young adults. All of the children’s titles are now available in the JSIS Library.  A few favorites include:

C:\Users\kmgillespie\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.MSO\E94AF70E.tmpMerci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina

    Ages 9-13 years

Merci navigates the challenges of being a scholarship kid at a posh South Florida private school and the expectations of and responsibilities to her intergenerational family.  Merci’s beloved Lolo (grandpa) begins to act erratically, and it becomes clear something secret and serious is happening. Medina writes about the joys of multigenerational home life (a staple of the Latinx community) with a touching, humorous authenticity.

C:\Users\kmgillespie\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Content.MSO\D29819DD.tmpDrawn Together by Minh Le & Dan Santat

    Ages 4 – 12 years

When a young boy visits his grandfather, their lack of a common language leads to confusion, frustration, and silence. But as they sit down to draw together, something magical happens-with a shared love of art and storytelling, the two form a bond that goes beyond words.
