    Dear Families,

I can’t believe that we’re already almost at the end of May!  We have several upcoming events as we near the end of the school year, which I will describe in more detail in my following newsletters.  Today’s newsletter is primarily focused on asking for your feedback and support.  Thank you, in advance, for your time and attention.

    Staffing Update

Thank you, again, for everyone who contributed to the Campaign to Put Students First!  Through your generosity and our school budget, I would like to share some exciting staffing changes for 2018-19.  Next year, we will have a .5 Visual Art teacher.  This will be a certificated art teacher who teaches lessons to all students.  We also have a wonderful opportunity for three teachers, one representing each language, to come together for half of each day to work on curriculum.  They will work together to strengthen our work around biliteracy development for all students, curriculum alignment, and assessment.  This is an incredible resource for JSIS, and we will be able to collaborate and share with the other International elementary schools.  We will also be able to have 1.6 staff members dedicated to intervention, K-5.  This is a very exciting addition to Mr. Pat and Ms. Elisabeth who support students in Special Education and ELL.  This support will be primarily focused on supporting students’ English reading needs.  We are also excited that JSIS will continue to have full time music, PE and library.  Of course, who is teaching what will not be shared until the end of August, but I can assure you that we are currently searching and interviewing some amazing candidates who will be fantastic additions to the JSIS community.

    School Pictures for 2018-19

This year we selected a non-traditional school photographer, Elena Blair.  Prior, we have used traditional photography companies.  Some major differences to consider are the backgrounds and types of smiles in the pictures. We would like to get your feedback as to which style of photography your family prefers before we select a company for 2018-19.  Please click this link and take this short one question survey to help us make a decision.

FAN – Families Assisting New Families

    Dear JSIS Families,

If you have a student entering kindergarten through fourth grade, you know what it feels like to anxiously wait for your SPS assignment letter to give you the great news that your child will attend JSIS...and then your language assignment letter... and then all the questions that flood through your mind!

All of us can remember what it was like to send your first baby to kindergarten and gather around the kindergarten playground as a new family to JSIS.  Those first few weeks and months can be a mix of emotion, and perhaps, a bit daunting.

These are the reasons we created the FAN program (Families Assisting New Families).  The FAN program supports new families by partnering them with returning families.  As a partner family, you will have the opportunity to answer questions for a new family, and to welcome them into the John Stanford community.

Our families are at the heart of our community, and it is that community which makes JSIS so special.  We hope that you will volunteer to partner with a new family to welcome them into our school and community.

Thank you, in advance, for your willingness to participate as a partner family.

    Intern Hosting for 2018-19

Interns are one of the most special aspects of JSIS.  We could not have interns without families to host them.

If you have hosted interns previously, we would really appreciate your feedback as we are always trying to improve the hosting experience.

If you are interested in hosting for 2018-19, please click the survey below.
