    Dear Families,

This evening was our annual 5th grade science fair.  This is the culmination of students’ elementary science learning.  Over the past few months, they have worked with mentors to create amazing science inquiries.  We are so thankful to all the parents and community members who support this amazing endeavor each year!

    Donation Drive for Mary’s Place

The third grade Spanish classes are organizing a homeless shelter donation drive for a local shelter in Seattle. Mary’s Place works primarily with families experiencing homelessness. These are the items(new) we are collecting: soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shoes, raincoats, diapers, shampoo and baby shampoo. There is a box for Mary's place in the school main entrance. April 6th will be the last day to donate. Thank you for your support!

    BLT Representatives for 2018-19

Are you interested in being a member of the Building Leadership Team?  This is a monthly meeting where parents and staff come together to work on the CSIP (the continuous school improvement plan), the budget and the schoolwide professional development plan.  We are looking for 4 parent representatives: K-1, 2-3, 4-5 and ELL.  In order to qualify, your child must be in that grade next year (18-19).  If you are curious, please ask your current BLT representatives or Ms. Sarah.  If you are interested, please send a paragraph about yourself and why you want to be a member of the BLT.  Please send your information to Ms. Sarah by Sunday, April 22.

Task Force Recommendation – Questions around Single Language

You may have seen the recommendation from the Task Force, or the blurb in eNEWS about the conversation to consider JSIS and McDonald becoming single language schools. This was the most contentious recommendation from the Task Force.  There are many legitimate reasons why some people want single language schools, and many reasons why people want multiple languages within each school.  Currently, the recommendations sit in the School Board’s hands.  All of the recommendations from the Task Force and all of the recommendations from the International School Program Review have been submitted to the School Board.  Although there is no time frame or next steps for any of the recommendations, I can say that I believe it is extremely unlikely that the School Board will take up any decision making until well after the new Superintendent is hired.

    From SPS:

Levies 2019 community meetings scheduled | Share with staff and families

Planning is underway for two levies to be submitted to Seattle voters in February 2019. TheOperations Levy, a renewal of the expiring Operations Levy, provides approximately 20 percent of the district’s general fund annual budget and supports educational programs not fully funded by the state. The Building Excellence V (BEX V) Capital Levy, a renewal of the expiring BEX IV Capital Levy, includes projects to improve safety and security needs, add space to meet growing enrollment, replace or repair school buildings and systems and fund major preventive maintenance throughout the district. Seattle Public Schools requests your input and feedback on possible projects.

District staff members will present information, listen and collect your input and feedback, and answer questions. Please join us. The district can provide ASL and language interpreters if requested five days in advance. Email or call 206-252-0070 (language interpreters) to request support.
