    Dear Families,

What a wonderful two days we have had so far!  It felt incredible to stand on the corner as children were crossing and know their names; such a difference from last year!  On Wednesday, as I visited classrooms, children were already engaged in learning, having fun, building community and getting to know their classmates and teachers.  As a school, we are working on ways to integrate both language tracks, and at lunch the K-2 sit by grade level, but both Spanish and Japanese students sit, eat and talk together.  As they grow into 3-5th graders, they are allowed to sit anywhere they want, so in addition to sitting with friends from the other language, they are also sitting with friends in other grades.  It is lovely!  I am so excited for our Kinders to join next Monday.  In addition, next week I will start inviting students to join me in my office for lunch.  Again, I have created a calendar, and believe I will be able to host each child in our school for lunch in my office before Winter Break.

I would like to share that we have hired a counselor, Mr. Michael.  He will be at JSIS on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Friday mornings.  We are working to get him an SPS email, but until then, you are welcome to leave him a note or send an email to him through me, Ms. Jill, or your child’s teacher.  We are working steadily to fill our other positions (5th grade Spanish and Kindergarten English support).  I will keep you updated!

As someone new last year, my goal in this newsletter is two-fold.  I want to share information and reflections, but I also want to proactively provide information I wish I would’ve known last year.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is something you are wondering about, because I’m sure others are wondering too.

    Thoughtfully,

    Sarah

    A few pieces of information:

    First Day Packets:

All of our first day materials are electronic this year.  If you want them in paper, just let the office know.  Attached is the flyer that went home with your child (or will come home, if you’re a kinder family).  Here is the link:

If you can help the office sort papers as they are returned, please let Ms. Jill know.

    Welcome Donuts, Monday, September 11:

Kinders will be safely and lovingly in their classrooms, and parents are invited to join the PTA on the lower playground right after drop off for donuts and an opportunity to meet members of our PTA, and talk to other JSIS parents.

Wednesday, September 13th Coffee Hour, 8-9am:

Coffee Hour has moved from Fridays to Wednesdays this year.  It will also alternate monthly between right after drop off and right before pick up.  We meet in the LSA classroom on the first floor, behind the cafeteria.  Coffee hour is an informal time to come and ask questions.  Younger siblings are welcome during coffee hour, and I invite you to come and chat.  This is also a great time to connect with other parents.  In addition, this is our first early release.  Please remember that students are dismissed at 1:10pm.

Fall Ice Cream Social – Friday, September 15th from 6:30-7:30

Many of you are familiar with our Spring PTA ice cream social.  In the spring, we have a wonderful opportunity for all JSIS families to come together, along with anyone who has been newly accepted, chat, play, and eat ice cream.  After seeing the success of this event in June, PTA and I thought it would be fantastic to host a fall ice cream social.  We hope that everyone will come together on the lower playground, talk to families you haven’t seen since last spring, children will play, and everyone will eat ice cream. This will also be a great opportunity for children to introduce new students in their class, and for families to connect.  I hope to see everyone!

    Pictures – September 18th & 19th

This year I am excited to announce that BLT (our Building Leadership Team, composed of staff and parents) unanimously approved switching photography companies.  We selected parent Elena Blair!  If you have not checked out her website, please take a look: http://www.elenasblairphotography.com/school-photography-seattle/

These photographs will be different than the traditional school photographs, but we hope you agree that they are amazing!  In addition, she will offer an opportunity if you have multiple children enrolled at JSIS to get a sibling picture taken (sorry, only siblings enrolled at JSIS).  I am attaching her flyer so that you can learn about her pictures, ordering and prices since everything will be done on line.
